Not every joint is created equal, what makes one better than the other?

We would all like to believe that every pre-roll is filled with quality buds. Remember breaking down an eighth and rolling up a fatty? It’d usually burn for a while and wouldn’t run because it was rolled with the quality and care that only hand-rolling a joint can provide. So you would think that when cannabis pre-rolls are being produced at a commercial level, that the same amount of quality and care could not possibly go into the product, and you’d be mostly right. On top of that, some producers tend to use sub-par bud, sub-par trim, or both. That doesn’t mean you can’t find a good pre-roll out there though. Here’s how.

It goes without saying that you will just have to try a pre-roll to find out if it’s to your liking or not. Let’s dive into what you should look for when you try one!
The first pull off of a pre-roll is very telling. You’ll instantly know by the taste what quality of herb is in your doobie. Typically you want a fresh cannabis taste, nothing that tastes harsh or like chemicals. Quality trim and good bud will always taste fresh. If you get something that is harsh it likely has dried out because the packaging wasn’t airtight or it sat out too long when being produced. If you’re getting a chemical taste it could be because the flower or concentrate going into that pre-roll was subpar. Especially when it comes to infused pre-rolls, some companies will use their lesser product because they don’t know what else to do with it. An unfortunate circumstance.

Is your pre-roll running? Well, you better go catch it. Bad joke, I know. However, it is important to note whether or not your pre-roll runs. This can be indicative of an improperly packed joint and can really hinder your smoking experience, making it feel as if you didn’t get as many pulls out of your doobie as you would have liked. It’s important to note that when you’re smoking in a windy environment, even a properly packed joint can run, so take that into consideration before letting this particular issue impact your judgment.
This is a lesser-known thing to watch out for but it’s quite important. If you notice that the ash is black or dark gray, that’s indicative of unwanted substances and mineral content in the cannabis you’re smoking. However, if the ash from your pre-roll is light gray or almost as white as the rolling paper, the cannabis is considerably clean.
If your joint is going out in between hits, this is also indicative of badly cured or dried-out cannabis. We’re not talking about it going out because you got really stoned and forgot to hit it for 5 minutes, that makes sense. However, if you’re in the middle of smoking it and finding that you have to babysit it and continue lighting it, that’s not a good sign. If this is happening to your joint then you’re probably having all the other issues we listed on this list as well.
